Another botched execution! Why the PC(USA) consistently stands against it

Tennessee just bungled another lethal injection, and it's a complete mess. When the state straps a human being to a gurney and fails twice to finish the job, we're way past any serious talk of law and order. We're just watching state-sponsored cruelty happen in real time.
Politicians love using fancy, clinical terms to mask what's really going on. They talk about closure and justice so folks don't look too closely at the mechanics of the thing. But every time an execution goes sideways, it exposes the whole ugly reality.
Killing people in the name of the people of the State is messy, brutal, and completely backward. If the State can't even run an execution without turning it into a gruesome disaster, maybe it's time to admit the whole operation is indefensible.
This goes way beyond basic human rights or bureaucratic incompetence. For folks who sit in church, it hits right at the core of the Gospel of Christ.
Jesus lived under the thumb of a brutal Roman empire that loved a good execution, but His entire ministry pushed back against that exact brand of empire logic. He offered grace instead of payback and stepped in to stop angry crowds from throwing stones.
The whole point of the Gospel is that nobody is garbage, nobody is beyond redemption, and we've got to stop letting governments play executioner.
That is exactly why the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) and the Roman Catholic Church have spent decades pushing back against capital punishment.
Both groups get that taking a life doesn't heal a community or bring anybody real peace. It just keeps the wheel of violence spinning. When the PC(USA) and the Catholic bishops raise a ruckus about this, they're pointing toward a higher standard. They're reminding us that showing mercy isn't a weakness and that killing folks in the name of public safety is a dead-end street.
Around Chicago, we know how heavy community safety can feel, and we know real neighborhood strength comes from investing in people and fixing what's broken, not writing folks off. Doubling down on a barbaric system just to satisfy a political itch or a craving for revenge is a joke.
It's time to look at the mess the state is making and finally pull the plug on the whole apparatus.
